蘇木素是組織化學(xué)和免疫組織化學(xué)中最常用的染料之一，可以廣泛用于組織切片或培養(yǎng)細胞的細胞核染色。VG（Van Gieson） 染色是最早用來區(qū)分膠原纖維和肌纖維的傳統(tǒng)優(yōu)良染色法，利用酸性品紅和苦味酸分別對這兩種纖維具有較強親和力的原理，將其雙重染色；染色后膠原纖維呈鮮紅色，肌纖維、神經(jīng)膠質(zhì)細胞胞質(zhì)和紅細胞呈黃色，Weigert蘇木素染色液主要應(yīng)用于細胞核染色后需要酸處理的技術(shù)中， 可以和VG染色配合使用，染色后細胞核呈藍色或棕藍色。
